17+ years experience
Born in Cape Cod, MA., I moved to the Pacific Northwest at a young age. I was raised singing and playing music in numerous choirs, bands, and in private lessons. I have worked as a singer-songwriter (check out my two albums on this website!), church music leader, and music educator in the San Francisco Bay Area and Oregon.
I currently reside in Salem, OR. as a full-time elementary music educator and teach piano online and in-person in my home studio.
I enjoy exploring my surroundings, collecting records and teacups, and antique hunting alongside my 2 children and my cat, Cheddar.
piano lesson philosophy
I utilize a wide variety of sources to teach music. My go-to piano curricula include Faber Piano Adventures and Piano Safari. I appreciate that these books utilize many forms of musicianship, including: sight-reading, ear-training, music literacy, technique, and composition.
Alongside piano book curricula, I also like to employ games, listening playlists, and videos for students to utilize at home. Furthermore, I make it a priority to have at least one project piece that is chosen by the student alongside these activities.
I began playing music because I was enamored by “The Entertainer,” played on the ice cream truck. At 7 years old, I began playing it by ear. This was my gateway into music. I continued to play many songs by ear and compose my own music, but had many teachers who did not want to cultivate this piece of my musicianship. I often wonder why they didn’t. It became my lifelong mission to find every student’s “ice cream truck,” the ticket that piques interest and opens the door to more learning and fun.
I understand each student has their own gateway: genres they enjoy, abilities they bring to the table, and learning styles that work for them.
Not every student connects with music in the same way! Some students love to learn by ear, others through sheet music. My goal is to cultivate students who can do it all, experiencing the joy of creating and enjoying music in many ways.
